Top Organic Body Lotions

January, just the thought makes my skin feel dry and itchy! Having dry skin all year is a fact of life when you live at 7200’ as I do. Over the years I have tried dozens of moisturizers. While some body moisturizers actually made a difference, many did not. Then I read the ingredients, which were confounding, to say the least. With the help of ‘Merriam Webster’, I discovered some ugly truths about my quest to hydrate my skin. Many of the lotions I was using were anything but natural! First let clear up the misconception that everything applied to your skin is abosrbed into the blood stream. This could not be further from the truth.

The largest organ in the human body is the skin. Contrary to popular belief, everything you put on your skin is not absorbed into your bloodstream. Made up of 5 layers, our epidermis (skin) is designed to be defensive, meaning each skin layer has a specific function and works hard to prevent the absorption of bacteria, allergens, and other irritants. Transdermal medications and patches are specifically formulated to be absorbed into your bloodstream whereas lotions and other types of moisturizers are designed to penetrate the skin.
There is a succinct difference between penetration and absorption. Penetration takes place when a chemical reaches the deeper layers of the skin, while absorption is when the chemical enters the bloodstream.
So now you can hydrate your skin without fear! Here are five of my personal favorite organic body moisturizers that are affordable.
Attitude Baby Leaves
Hands down, this lotion is amazing! Specifically formulated for babies, it is light and moisturizes wonderfully well without chemicals or harsh ingredients. My preference is Almond Milk. So, I purchased another one in Pear Nectar as a gift for my niece who just had a baby, however, not only does she use it all the time on the baby and herself, her 3-year-old son loves it too! I highly recommend this lotion and will continue to try Attitudes other products.
Attitude has formulations for babies 0-2y, kids 2-12y as well as pregnant and nursing mothers. You will also find hair care, soaps, household cleaning products as well as a line of pet care products.
Made in Canada, it is hypoallergenic, cruelty-free & vegan, ECOLOGO certified and recyclable.
Available in Unscented, Almond Milk and Pear Nectar.

Weleda Skin Food Nourishing Body Lotion
Part of the Skin Food collection this creamy lotion leaves your skin feeling silky smooth. Plant extracts of pansy, chamomile, rosemary and calendula, the mainstay of the Skin Food formula since 1926, give this lotion a wonderful aroma that may be too strong for some, however, there is a fragrance-free option.

Shea Moisture 100% Coconut Oil & Organic Shea Butter All-Over Hydration Body Lotion
Shea Moisture has been a staple in my home for many years. To date, this is my favorite Shea product. With a light scent of coconut, it is somewhat thick however, it does absorb quickly and leaves my skin well hydrated throughout the day. The best part is that not only is it available at most major big box stores, but it is also cost-effective and organic to boot!

Burt’s Bees güd Natural Body Lotion in Vanilla Flame
While the scent might be a little strong for some, (myself included, although I love the scent, I find that if I use this just on my legs the aroma isn’t overwhelming), the Vanilla Flame, made with vanilla and rice milk goes on silky smooth and absorbs very quickly. What I love is the feel of this lotion. My legs are much softer and less flakey after just a few days of using this lotion.

Available online and in many local retailers.
8 fl oz / 235 ml from $9.00
